Overview

Just off the Kapiti Coast is Kapiti Island, a bird and nature sanctuary free of predators and pests. This overnight experience offers the one-of-a-kind opportunity to stay overnight on the otherwise uninhabited island. Try one of the island’s many walking tracks and spot native birds in the canopy. Later, enjoy drinks & nibbles followed by a chef-prepared meal, then head out for a guided night walk to see & hear the island come alive in a different way.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kapiti Island - visit Rangatira Point

Stop At: Kapiti Island, New Zealand
Our overnight experience package is all-inclusive and gives you 2 full days on the island.

We’ll have a yummy packed lunch waiting for you at check-in, then you'll be met by an experienced local guide at Rangatira in the middle of the island. Your guide will walk with you, share the rich human and ecological stories, and help you identify the flora and fauna around you. From the arrival of the first Māori to the eradication of the last rat, we will take you through the history of this land.

At Rangatira you will also have the chance to climb Kapiti's highest peak, Tuteremoana, or explore the lower tracks through established New Zealand forest. In the afternoon you'll be transported to Waiorua, where you'll spend the night at the lodge. You'll be treated to local beer and wine, and a delicious home cooked meal before heading out after dark on a guided night walk.

Staying in a cosy cabin, you'll fall asleep to the sound of calling Kiwi and Weka, Kaka and Ruru.
Duration: 5 hours

Meals included:
• Dinner: Delicious local kai (food), includes pre-dinner drinks & nibbles.
• Lunch: A yummy packed lunch from a local cafe.
Accommodation included: Stay overnight in one of our comfy cabins.

Day 2: Kapiti Island - explore Waiorua

Stop At: Kapiti Island, New Zealand
A hot breakfast and fresh coffee will help you experience the world come alive as you watch the sunrise over Waiorua Bay, on one of the oldest sanctuaries in the world.

You'll spend your second day exploring the Waiorua tracks, with a coastal or hill walk available. After a hot lunch at the lodge, you'll depart Kapiti in the afternoon of day 2.

Please note: the coastal walk is generally closed between 1 October & 31 March due to nesting seabirds.

Amazing experience. Stayed overnight in the on suite cabin with our family of four. The bird life would come right up to our door. Amazing views from the deck. The walks were great too, with knowledgeable guides and well maintained paths. Saw all sorts of birds you can’t see elsewhere. Highly recommended

Such a beautiful place to relax and enjoy New Zealand at its best - peaceful and abundant in wildlife. Staying overnight at the beautiful homestead was an amazing experience. There is something sacred about being welcomed into this special, family place to be treated with warmth and generosity. Our guide, Manaaki was gifted in making people feel welcome as he shared his knowledge and understanding of the island and its inhabitants. The food was beautiful and plentiful and the dining area was conducive to sharing conversation and hospitality with others. I loved the night walk. It was magical. A different atmosphere descended as the nocturnal creatures sprang to life. Our group did not see a kiwi, but we could hear them about their business and I liked the idea that they had outwitted us. We stayed in the ensuite and had the cosiest bed ever! Having seen the lovely shared facilities and the other accommodation options, I would have been happy to stay in any of them. My only suggestion would be that the ensuite should not be described as having a self-contained kitchen as it cannot be used due to the fire risk. Nobody needs a kitchen anyway - food and drinks are always readily available at the main whare.

Kapiti Island is a must visit! The range and scale of birdlife on the Rangatira side of the motu is among the best I think I've ever seen - particular mentions to the takahe, kaka, hihi and weka, which you're less likely to see just out and about yourself in the bush. The guided tours are great - love the mix of history and te taiao (natural world) knowledge. Special props to Tiare for building up the courage to give us a tour i Te Reo Māori. 10/10 Heading over to the Waiorua side of the island for the overnight stay was also very good, but pretty pricey, so if you're just wanting a lower key experience, think the day tour on its own would be perfectly enough to get the beauty of the place. The Rangatira side of the island has much more established bush, and better bird life overall, though the dawn chorus was a highlight of staying the night. We went kiwi searching on the night walk, which was cool, even though we didn't see any kiwi. Alyssa our guide was very enthusiastic, and we appreciated her fulsome efforts to get us to see some birdlife. On Waiorua, enjoyed the manaaki/ care of our hosts and the whakapapa connection of staying with mana whenua hosts who have had family on the island for 200 years. Manaaki would have been a bit improved with better care for dietary requirements. The food for me was excellent, but for my GF DF wife it felt very much like they'd tacked on some random additions to their usual food, which weren't really anywhere as nice. 8/10 Overall highly recommend the whole experience

Lovely trip, well worth the money. Overnight stay was like a family holiday at the bach except we didn't have to do the dishes. Food was great. The guides were knowledgeable and their personal connections to the island added an extra layer. Birds everywhere. Great job to you guys for having the idea and getting the business started. One complaint - my bed was so comfortable that I gave up on my plans to get up to hear the dawn chorus!
