Overview

This is not another walking tour but a small group tour travel by private tuktuk and offer unlimited beer and soda while you and your English-speaking guide are whisked around Xi’an off the beaten path. You will eat where the locals eat at small, family-run businesses and try the best local food at places you can’t find on your own. After 3 hours, you will finish at a local brewery to have a pint of the only craft brew in town.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Pass By: Xi'an City Wall (Chengqiang), Zhongxin District, Xi'an 710001 China

You will meet at an easy-to-find central location and then wind your way through the narrow streets and alleys by tuktuk within the Xi’an City Wall to find the best food in the city. We’ll take you places where only locals go. You’ll cover a lot of ground and get off the beaten path to family-run restaurants that you (and other tourists) won’t find on your own. Between food stops, you’ll be able to chat with your English-speaking guide about the city while drinking unlimited chilled beer and soda during the ride.

Stop At: Muslim Quarter, West of Bell Drum Towers Square , Beilin District, Xi'an 710000 China

While visiting our 4-5 food stops, you will get to learn about the families that have been making their specialties for generations. You’ll watch your food being made and learn about what makes it so special to Xian locals. Whether it’s sitting by an old man grilling meat over coals in a quaint Muslim Quarter alleyway, or watching noodles hand-pulled to order, there is something to try for everyone.

The tour will finish at the only local brewery in Xian where you can tour the facility and sample what’s on tap before we treat you to a pint of your choice.

Our tour guide Buren was amazing. He was punctual, kind, and did a great job explaining where we were going and what we were eating. He provided good historical insights into some of the types of food. He was conversational and you could tell he enjoyed his job.

The evening with our guide Jane and some new friends was so much fun. We moved around via tuk tuk so it would be easy for anyone to join and enjoy their time eating and learning about local foods and culture. Our guide was very engaging and knowledgable. Special dietary requirements were taken into account and swaps made where needed. Would 100% recommend people to take this tour!

My adult daughter and I really wanted to explore the diverse cuisines in Xian after watching many YouTube videos. We decided to take this tour on 4/17/2024, the first evening of our visit. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we could have made. Our tour guide, Buren, reached out to us via WeChat 3 days prior to our tour to introduce himself and find out if we had any dietary restrictions. There were 8 people in our group, including a family of 4 from France, a woman from Northern California, a woman from New York, and us. We split into 3 TukTuks. Each TukTuk could theoretically accommodate 4 people, but it would be cramped. We had diverse dietary restrictions and preferences. One member didn’t eat meat, some didn’t like lamb. Some of us could only tolerate a mild level of spiciness. Buren made sure he covered all our preferences and ordered enough at each stop for all of us to get a taste of a restaurant’s offering. There were 5 stops: the first 3 in the Muslim Quarters, the 4th a Chinese restaurant, and lastly a beer pub. Our 1st stop was for the famous Biang Biang Noodle. It’s called Biang Biang because of the sound it makes when the chef throws the dough on the table to pull and shape the noodle. It’s served with raw garlic and house made chili sauce. I can’t eat very spicy food and just a whiff of the chili sauce made me sneeze! However, the noodle was so chewy and delicious that I could have finished the whole bowl. I’m glad I stopped myself as there was so much more to come. The 2nd stop was a BBQ restaurant with skewers of beef, lamb and fish. It also served a wonderful grilled breads called Tuo Tuo Mo (妥妥馍). There was no set menu. Buren ordered a variety to start then ordered more by request. The 3rd stop was a restaurant famous for their soup dumplings and cold noodle with sesame sauce. I was pretty full by now and could only have a bite of each. No alcohol was available in the Muslim Quarters. For those looking for a cold beer to quench their thirst, they’d have to wait till we got out of the area. Our 4th stop was a charming Chinese restaurant in a dark alley between apartment buildings. Here we had the famous local dish, Gourd Chicken (葫芦鸡). It was juicy with crispy fried skins. The flavor was complex and it is the best fried chicken we’ve had. We ended up ordering it again the next day. We were all so full by now that we left most of the other dishes untouched. Our last stop was a beer pub near the City Wall. Buren ordered a flight of beer for us to taste and pick our favorite to order. Non-alcoholic drinks were also available. We could have stayed there longer but it was close to 11pm by then, so some of us decided to call it a night and went back to our hotels. In all, the tour took over 4.5 hours. We were so glad we did it on our first night in Xian because it allowed us to know what we liked and wanted to have more. As we started our sightseeing on the next two days, we didn’t feel the need to chase down famous dishes we had yet to try. No FOMO! Buren followed up by sending us the list of food he ordered for us. He also gave us other restaurant recommendations based on where we would be on our tours. We were so glad to have him as our guide. We highly recommend this tour and want to take similar tours at other Lost Plate locations in the future.
