Overview

In this tour we will delve into the topics that interest you most: art, history, archaeology, etc.
We will follow your pace to ensure that you have the most enjoyable experience possible in this unique hill town.
One of the Etruscan cities par excellence. It still preserves many vestiges of this period as well as the Roman and medieval ones: the etruscan Porta all'Arco, the Roman theater, Piazza dei Priori, the cathedral and baptistery, and tower-houses. Volterra holds an immense treasure trove of art, archaeology, and craftsmanship. Volterra was built on high ground which, if it once provided security, today allows you to enjoy an impressive panorama.
For craft lovers, we can arrange a visit to an alabaster workshop.

Itinerary

Stop At: Piazza dei Priori, 56048, Volterra Italy

It is the heart of the city. This square is overlooked by the most important buildings of the Communal Age such as Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo Pretorio. Many traces are still visible that tell of this era.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Porta all'Arco, Volterra Italy

Volterra is a perennial archaeological site. It was a rich and powerful Etruscan city and fortunately still preserves some traces of this era such as Porta all'Arco, a rare example of an Etruscan city gate.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Cathedral of Volterra, Piazza San Giovanni, 56048, Volterra Italy

This square is overlooked by the city's most important religious buildings such as the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the former Hospital. Volterra boasts the birth of the second pope after St. Peter, St. Linus. Not surprisingly, his evangelization was so early that he founded an equally early diocese that would become influential and rich throughout the Middle Ages and beyond.
Our walk includes only a visit to the square and does not include a tour inside the buildings.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Teatro Romano, Piazza Caduti nei Lager Nazisti, 56048, Volterra Italy

Volterra remained an important city even after its conquest by the Romans. Many finds testify to this, especially the presence of buildings such as the baths and the Roman theater.
We will talk about the theater from a vantage point that allows its explanation without going inside.

It was an interesting tour that review in two hours the history of city. It begins at the etruscan gate and ends with the view of the roman theather. In between the medieval times : the duomo and civil palaces. Finally there were the visit to know how the alabaster stones are converted in beautiful statues.

Amazing tour of Volterra! We loved the history and views. Especially the alabaster workshop and how to work with alabaster. How the main gate was saved during the war! The local lore of Volterra was fascinating. Highly recommend this tour. Luisa was amazing!

Luisa was an exceptional tour guide. We learned she was a an archeologist by training and was able to answer every question we threw at her. She knew the history of the city from the Etruscan period, Roman period, and Medieval period. Would highly recommend!

What an amazing tour we had☺️ Luiza is a true lover of Volterra, she knows this beautiful town’s history, buildings, stories, and the people inside out. It was a pleasure to spend our time with her and to get to know this Tuscan gem a little deeper. Definitely recommended, would book tours with her any time if we return.
