Had the most amazing time with this cooking tour. Started with a trip to the market for ingredients, which was an experience not to be missed! Then we were taken high up in the hills to a family home for the cooking lesson with Nandini and her helper. It was really interesting - we were involved with every step of the cooking process and what we produced was fantastic! Easily the best food we had in Sri Lanka, and more food than we could eat! Nandini was so kind and I would highly recommend this class.
An unforgettable experience in Kandy—a definite must-do. Everything is carefully explained step by step in a traditional Sri Lankan kitchen. There was a wide selection of food, and one could individually choose which vegetables to cook. In the process, we discovered many new varieties of vegetables that are typical of the region. When we mentioned that someone in our group was celebrating a birthday, they immediately organized a small birthday celebration. The family is incredibly kind and creates a welcoming atmosphere. We would highly recommend this cooking class experience to anyone.
We had such a special experience! Shayama and Nindani are wonderful hosts and chefs. We learnt so much about how to cook authentic Sri Lankan food - 9+ dishes in all! Truly amazing. Make sure you come hungry and get stuck in. Highly recommend!
We are doing a tour of Sri Lanka with AGS Tours and the incredible Sudesh (look up and use him). We had to change a plan due to the weather and he said his wife had a cooking school that even though they were booked that day would find a way. He took us to his home in Kandy where we met his wife Yasani and mother Nandani. After feeding their stunning Koi Carp, they took us to the gorgeous authentic kitchen, his children took the boys into the house and taught them to play ‘Carron’ a Sri Lankan game that they are now addicted to. We were asked to choose 5 vegetables from a huge and eclectic collection. Under matriarch Nandani’s careful instruction we made Coconut milk from scratch, prepared and spiced all the dishes before setting them to cook many of them on a wood fired clay oven. I somewhat nervously made poppadoms in coconut oil over an open flame before we served up what I can only describe as a banquet!! Chicken Curry Gotukola Sambal Ochra Curry Green Beans Eggs Poached in Coconut Miik Loofah curry (you can eat them - who knew?!) Dhal Aubergine Moju (this is insanely good) Poppadoms All of this done without warning in a traditional kitchen in 1.5 hours! Using the first and second pressing of the Coconut milk gave flavours unlike anything we have eaten here and is a touch that only a family cook would bother to do. This was a magical experience and we are indebted to Yasani for welcoming us into her home and doing this with no notice. If you actually book you get to go to the market and choose your ingredients as part of the class. This was a truly memorable experience of real authentic Sri Lanka. Thank you to the whole Gamage family - it truly is a Family Affair!
So much more than a cooking class! Though you do get some hands on cooking and all the recipes afterwards, you also get to spend time n a family home and learn about Sri Lankan culture too. This was a great experience!
