Even if I was alone, they took me for the market and the coocking class. The owners are so friendly, and explain you everything. And the meal is wonderful, so much different tastes. Best meal in Sri Lanka so far! I highly recommand, thanks!
Five stars simply isn't enough for Shyama and Kumari, wonderful experience! We were picked up in a tuk tuk and taken directly to a fruit and veg market where we chose our desired ingredients. Their village is located a little further away from Kandy city, offering lush green views and a traditional Sri Lankan set up outside Shyama's home. They were both incredibly informative and friendly, I would recommend this cooking class to anyone who enjoys Sri Lankan food and wants to experience something more authentic.
What an amazing experience. I have done a lot of cookery courses in other countries with my daughter whilst travelling and this was one of the best. Shyana was the most lovely lady and invited us in to her family home. We made 7 curries plus an extra bonus one for my daughter as well as poppadom and rice. We had breakfast treats and tea on arrival which were excellent. We used the clay oven and learned the corrected ingredients to make these beautiful curries at home. My husband and other daughter collected us and had the food for lunch and said it was the best they had tried. Thank you Shyana.
i could not recommend this class more - we had an amazing time from start to finish. we met Shyama at the market to buy the ingredients, where she showed us all the different produce. we then took a tuk tuk back to her village. it was a nice touch to walk part of the way so she could show us the paddy fields, cocoa trees, etc. the wooden hut where we cooked is beautiful and very peaceful - we watched the sun set as we cooked. shyama took us through all the different ingredients and spices used in each dish and even showed us how to make fresh coconut milk! the experience itself is very enjoyable - we cooked 9 dishes in total, and there is the right balance of cooking yourself / letting the teachers help. every single dish tasted absolutely amazing - we ate so much! they gave us fresh juice, coconut pancakes for dessert and even some fresh fruit to take home. shyama and her children and assistant are all lovely, very helpful and thoughtful, such wonderful hosts. it is also amazing value for money. do not think twice about booking - you will not regret it. make sure you go on an empty stomach!
We trundled uphill out of Kandy in our trusty tuk tuk, leaving the frenetic and dusty city, and the primitive but colourful spectrum of the marketplace behind us. Turning off the road into a rural idyll of rice paddies, grazing cattle and plantation trees did not disappoint - this class was a fascinating insight into rural family life in Sri Lanka, as well as a masterclass in how to cook Sri Lankan dishes with ease. We arrived at the outdoor mudbrick cookery school where candles burnt in coconut shell holders, the clay oven was lit, and the spices and vegetables had been chopped ready. We were taught how to make seven different curry dishes, all utterly delicious. An educational experience in so many ways, we came away with enthusiasm, recipes and much more besides. Thank you Shyama, we loved the whole experience…
