Overview

The Knuckles Mountain Range lies in central Sri Lanka, in the Districts of Matale and Kandy. The range takes its name from a series of recumbent folds and peaks in the west of the massif which resembles the knuckles of clenched fist when viewed from certain locations in the Kandy District. Whilst this name was assigned by early British surveyors, the Sinhalese residents have traditionally referred to the area as Dumbara Kanduvetiya meaning mist-laden mountain range. Knuckles Mountain Forest Range covering an area of approximately 21,000 ha is a part of the Central Highlands World Heritage site, declared in 2010. Though it is a part of Central Highlands it is well separated by Mahaweli river valley from the sides of South and east and Matale valley from the west. An amazing experience for life. The support we got from our tour guide , Janaka Soyza, was brilliant. A challenging hike, but the experience is just wonderful!

It was absolutely fantastic- one of the most authentic Sri Lankan experiences we ever had where nature and culture were both present! We booked the trip in the last minute (evening before) after reading an article online. The coordinator called us soon after and sent via whatsapp the itinerary and the price quote and we agreed on a pick up time. The jeep arrived reasonably on time, took us to breakfast, and then to the hike starting point. They distributed special anti-leech socks, water and raincoats for those of us who did not have (it was rainy). The route was not very challenging, the pace was very good and our guide was the best ine we ever had- super kind, knowledgable and entertaining, with insights on both nature and local culture - we saw a the rich variety of flora, the most sweet and smiling locals (much different from those you meet in the hustling towns) and even caught a close glance at an eagle. We had lunch by the waterfall and for the end of the tour some tea to warm us up after the rain that got us quite wet. Despite the rainy weather (we did get quite wet and did not have a change of clothes which would have saved us from being so called on the ride back) and the many leeches (really bear in mind that there are a lot of them and are more disgusting than harmful) the experience was totally worth it and we highly recommend this hike - especially with the great guide (we did not catch his name) we were so lucky to have! :)

Wir wurden um 6Uhr vom Hotel in Kandy abgeholt und es ging dann erstmal knapp 2 Std zu einem Dorf wo wir Singhalesisches Frühstück bekamen. Von dort war es nur noch 1km bis zum Start. Wir hatten unseren eigenen Guide, welcher uns sehr viel erklärte und sehr viel Flora zeigte und über seine Kultur und die der Einwohner Sri Lankas berichtete. Wir wanderten erst für eine halbe Std eine stets aufwärts gehende Straße entlang bis es dann am Rand des Berges relativ steil hochging. Das ging für 45min aber wir machten genug Pausen um den Puls wieder auf normallevel zu bekommen. Danach ging es durch den Dschungel und wir konnten entscheiden ob wir auf den Knuckles Berg hovhwollen (22km mit sehr hartem Aufstieg) oder die Wasserfalltour machen wollen (18-19km mit gediegenen Auf und Abstieg)..wir entschieden uns für die Wasserfälle. Es war sehr heiß und trocken und es war die beste Entscheidung an dem Tag. Die Tour zu den Wasserfällen ist nichts für schwache Nerven und man sollte generell für die Tour ein moderates Fitnesslevel mitbringen. Wir machten die komplette Tour mit 18km in 6.5 Std mit teilweise krassen auf und abstiegen aber unser Guide war super und hat uns ein echt tolles Erlebnis beschert. Große Empfehlung!!
