Overview

Jo’burg. Jozi. Egoli. Built on gold, Johannesburg has always been a city of opportunities!

Named after Johann Rissik (principal clerk surveyor-general of the Transvaal Republic) and Christiaan Johannes Joubert (chief of mining and member of the Volkstaad) who recommended the area be declared a goldfield, it owes its existence to George Harrison – a penniless prospector who first discovered gold here in 1886.

Trace Johannesburg’s history from its humble gold-mining beginnings to the pulsing streets of this modern-day African economic giant with a personal tour from Stephenson Adventures. This tour is simply the best way to explore and experience the city of Gold.

We’ve had an amazing trip with Mo!! We even had a private tour, due to low season. That felt already really special. We learned a LOT about the events around apartheid and of course the life of Nelson Mandela. Heavy information, but really good to know how it affected the lives of the people living in Johannesburg and Soweto. And how it still affects them. Thanks a lot to Mo for sharing some personal information about his life. We saw all sides of Johannesburg and Soweto, and we felt very safe at all times as well. Would definitely recommend when visiting Johannesburg!

Monwabisi “Mo” was a wonderful guide. He has very good communication skills, and a positive welcoming personality that made us feel welcomed to Johannesburg, and we knew we were with a knowledgeable guide. He provided an overview on each site of our itinerary, including historical information and context. He drove us through Johannesburg to give us a good perspective of the city. He answered a variety of questions so there was clarity. He was thoughtful and checked on our needs. He had the restaurant accommodate our requests for menus instead of the buffet, due to dietary needs. We had ample time at sites at Mandela Square, Mandela, home while in office, Constitution Hill, and in Soweto, we Mandela House, Regina Mundi Church, and the Kliptown Youth Program. The KYT was an impressive visit, and seen the CNN Hero Awards when KYP was a recipient.
