Overview

Join Srividya in the kitchen for a private cooking class to learn to make two to three dishes from scratch. She will teach you about a variety of South Indian culinary traditions as you cook and eat together.  You will sense her pride as she shares interesting anecdotes and stories that highlight the traditions and science behind the foods you will enjoy at her table. Srividya offers vegetarian food only.

Meet Srividya at her apartment in the T Nagar neighborhood of Chennai. Your culinary experience begins with a hands-on cooking lesson in her kitchen where you will learn to cook 2-3 dishes. South India has an immense culinary heritage and the range of dishes you taste at Srividya's table reflect this bounty. Your meal will showcase the diversity and unique dishes from a range of cuisines, like Mudaliar and Tamilian Brahmin cooking.

Srividya worked for many years in the luxury hotel industry and relishes the opportunity to introduce her guests to South India's cultural and culinary traditions. She lives in a cozy, immaculately clean apartment with her husband, mother, and two children, all of whom are self-described foodies who love to cook together as a family. She delights in preparing fresh, healthy meals using locally grown vegetables and ingredients. She enjoys the balance of a complete meal that has variety in terms of flavors, nutrition, pace, texture, and digestion. You will sense her pride as she shares interesting anecdotes and stories that highlight the traditions and science behind the foods you will enjoy at her table.

A meal in Srividya’s home presents a taste of Tamil Nadu served on a vibrant banana leaf (when seasonably available). You can expect to taste seasonal dishes such as vegetable curries, fish curry, dosas (South Indian-style crispy crepes), pillowy idlis (fluffy, savory cakes), kozhukattai (South Indian dumplings) made from a variety of flour, tamarind rice or curd rice, and her homemade mango pickle.

Please note, this is not a professional cooking class, rather this experience is a visit into an authentic, local home to meet a local person and share the culture and cuisine together.

I had a fantastic experience, and learnt so much about Southern Indian cooking with Srividya, who explained all about the various ingredients, spices and cooking process. I thoroughly enjoyed eating what was prepared, and chatting about the food. Srividya and her family were very friendly and made me feel very welcomed, and would definitely recommend this fun and interesting activity.

Amazing experience to learn Indian vegan home cooking and dine at a home setting. The host, Sricidya lives in a pleasant quiet neighbourhood, and she was very nice and patient in attending to my queries ( though may have sounded silly to her) and explaining each step of the recipes and possible alternatives etc etc. She was attentive to my vegan dietary need, and used all ingredients vegan, e.g. replacing ghee with coconut oil and even getting nut-gurt to replace yogurt. I am sincerely grateful for that, and to learni what I can do for my own indian cooking. And importantly, Sriviya demonstrated dishes that I don't see in the restuarant, I think that's very heart warming! Very glad I made this trip and highly recommend to all who loves Indian home cooked dishes!!

Srividya was an excellent host and teacher. We loved the in home, personal experience of meeting a local, getting to see their home, sharing a meal together and learning about their culture. Not really a hands on cooking class, but enjoyable nonetheless. We had some trouble finding the location, but got there eventually. It would have been helpful to have been given the address earlier than that morning. We had already left the hotel and had no internet access, so did not see the email with the full address until afterwards.

Her cooking class was awesome. I had a lot of requests, and they accommodated all of them, and I was very satisfied with the lesson. The food was served on a large banana leaf, and all of the dishes were delicious. Pickle taught me how to make two different types. I would definitely like to take her lessons again. I highly recommend taking her lessons when she comes to Chennai.

Srividya and her family welcomed us into their condo-home for a cooking lesson.  A highlight of our Chennai visit. If you are curious, TRAVELING SPOON offers opportunities in many world cities. Cross-listed in La Vacanza Travel and TripAdvisor. We helped cook, mostly watched. We were served a beautiful meal and ate from a banana leaf "plate" with our right- hand fingers. What fun! The dishes prepared with us were: Keerai Kuzhambu (spinach steamed with tomato then finished with spices, dal in coconut oil and curry leaves) Kovakkai Perattal (a vegetable, steamed, then finished with spices, ground peanuts, and fresh grated coconut) Kuzhi Paniyaram (tiny round dumplings made with fermented dosa batter, served with chutneys and pickled mango) We gained some confidence that we might try to experience cooking these at home.  We took photos of the recipe progressions. A wonderful adventure! The home is in central Chennai near GRT Grand Chennai Hotel and the Hyatt. Uber works well for transport.
