Beaches in Kerala

Beaches in Kerala

With about 580 kilometers of coastline, it would be quite difficult to find the best beaches in Kerala, India. While the state is known around the world for its Backwaters, it is not short of fine beaches as well. So, which should you head to for the best beach experience in your Kerala holiday packages?  You can start with the following:

  • Kovalam Beach - This is considered as the most popular beach in the state thanks to its low tidal waves and shallow waters, which attracted masses of hippies in the early 70s, shooting the place into limelight and transforming it from a casual fishing village into one of the most important tourist destinations in all of India. In fact, it is said to have a more relaxed atmosphere than beaches in Goa, with a bit more laid-back attitude and softer and lighter food.
  • Alleppey Beach - While Alleppey is highly famous for its Backwaters, it also has a 137-year-old pier that extends into the sea, making it a very popular tourist spot in the state. The main draws in Alleppey Beach are its lighthouse, the Vijaya Beach Park and numerous entertainment facilities.
  • Marari Beach - This beach is known for having an endless stretch of golden sands and for offering peace and quiet, with a vast vista of sand and surf. This place will also allow you to have an authentic experience of the traditional fishing village in Kerala and a recreation of an old harmonious way of living. It is a perfect example of an unspoiled territory that will let you experience a unique local hospitality and charm at its best.
  • Kappad Beach - Situated about 16 kilometers from Calicut, this beach is well known as the landing point of Vasco da Gama when he arrived in Kerala on May 27, 1498. It has great waters for swimming and gives you the opportunity to watch fishermen going out to sea and coming back to spread their catches at the beach. The main features here include a 100-year-old temple and a rocky headland that stretches into the sea.
  • Varkala Beach - If you want to avoid the high prices and huge crowds in other beaches in the country, and are looking for a laid-back beach, then you should heat to Varkala Beach. When the neighboring Kovalam Beach became highly developed and filled with chain resorts, it is said that surfers drifted over to this more peaceful beach. The long stretch of sand here got the amenities that these people love, such as an assortment of local cafes and huts that serve sumptuous food and beer.
  • Shankumugham Beach - Located around 8 kilometers from Thiruvanathapuram, this beach is famous for the mermaid statue—Matsya Kanyaka—and a restaurant that is shaped like a starfish. It is also known for its beautiful sunset.
