Overview

The epicentre of Mumbai’s dizzying economic growth doesn’t lie behind glass facades of skyscrapers, but in a run-down neighborhood of Mumbai. The people here might not be your suit-clad businessmen, but are owners of multi-million dollar companies. These are the people of Dharavi – One of Asia’s largest slums.
In spite of the all the grunginess and squalor, Dharavi is the most bustling and economically proficient part of Mumbai, generating revenue of a staggering
billion US Dollars annually.
An erstwhile marshy fishing village, Dharavi creek dried up when a dam was built in the neighbouring area. As years rolled on, communities thrived economically, which is seen even today in the labyrinth of leather goods, embroidered dresses and clay pots of various designs, among others cottage industries. Also tour the cardboard industries and the recycle industry to understand the indispensable contribution of Dharavi to Mumbai’s ecological well-being.

  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund

1) The driver will be at the hotel 5 mins before the start of the tour.

2) Start time of the tour for North Mumbai hotels will vary.

3) If you are staying at the ship at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal and need a pick-up from outside the ship, there we be additional cost of Rs 1000/- per person. This amount is to be paid in cash to the guide or the driver at the start of the tour.

This tour was so educational! It’s hard to understand how a slum can be a self-sustaining economy with its own brand. If you have the time, book this tour. Our tour guide, Mujaffar, was an amazing tour guide with so much knowledge of the area. Request the tour with him. Highly recommend!

If like me you didn’t like the way some communities were portrayed in Slumdog Millionaire then this tour is for you. You’ll have a chance to see what this amazing community in the heart of Bombay is really about. With our guide Razak we were able to get really up close to the entrepreneurial spirit that underpins this community. Everybody works. Everybody earns. Everybody has an enormous respect for each other here. It was really quite incredible to see how not a thing is wasted. There are some areas which were very private and enclosed and it was a real privilege to be able to walk through these areas and learn about the traditions and customs. Much thanks to No Footprints and to Razak for arranging this incredible tour.

We loved this tour. It was fantastic to have a guide who grew up and still lived in Dharavi. His purpose was to change the negative perception people have of Dharavi through education and stories. We witnessed the heart of Mumbai through his knowledge of the community, the many different industries that make up Dharavi and even a school that was hosting a hip-hop competition. The kids break dancing were one of the highlights. love that no footprints engage with local people to educate tourists on this amazing city. Oh and having the chance to get a cute lil backpack branded with Dharavi was super cool. Love a piece that sparks a conversation. A big thank you to Furkan and his assistant guide. You guys were the best 🙏🏽
