The Top Tourist Spots in Gwalior
Gwalior Fort
The moment you step inside the majestic Gwalior Fort, you will be transported instantly to the grand days of Gwalior. The fort was once called by the Mughal Emperor Babur as the pearl in the necklace of the forts in India and is one of the country’s most impenetrable fortresses.
It is filled with temples, museums and palaces that show the rich history of Gwalior. The fort also became the shelter of Rani Lakshmi Bai, the legendary queen of Jhansi, as she fought the British army during the rebellion of 1857.
To commemorate her heroism, a statue of her at Phul Bagh on her horse was built on the same spot where she died.
Jaivilas Palace and Scindia Museum
Built in 1874 by Maharaja Jayaji Rao Scindia, Jaivilas features a combination of different architectural styles.
The first level has Tuscan style, the second Italian-Doric and the third Corinthian design. But the palace is most famous for its grand Durbar hall that features a huge hall carpet weaved by convicts for 12 years and two 3.5-ton chandeliers that is said to be the largest in the world.
Sasbahu Temples
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Padmanabha form, the twin Sasbahu temples were built in 1093 by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty inside Gwalior Fort.
Dating from the 9th to 11th centuries, the temples have dome and pillar covered roofs reminiscent of Central American Mayan temples. Much of the temple was destroyed during the Hindu-Muslim wars in the region, but its ruins are still so beautiful that you shouldn’t miss visiting this site.
Man Singh Palace
It is the only intact pre-Mughal palace in India and visiting it will leave you breathless. Man Singh Palace was built by Man Singh between 1486 and 1516 and is best known for its unique aesthetics showing the Tomar ruler’s passion for the arts.
Its exterior tilework is extremely colorful with mosaics of animals in yellow, blue and green.
